Jacqui Porter cringed whenever
she looked at the rarely used
formal dining room in her Boise,
Idaho, home. “The room hasn’t
had a purpose since we’ve lived
here,” she says. So she posted her
photos in our “Save My Room”
contest on
BHG.com
in hopes
that Stephen could make the
room a sophisticated place where
everyone could read and hang
out
365
days a year.

Stephen put the hardworking
elements of a beautiful dining
room in place—a large table,
upholstered chairs, and a
sideboard—then looked for ways
to make this room pull double
duty. Bookcases and more seating
created a library on one wall, and
smart storage works for both
dining and reading.

CHOOSE SIDES
The table and
sideboard anchor the
dining function on one
side of the room. The
other side is devoted
to a comfortable
reading space (see

).
